Storyloft character illustrations let you invent recurring faces for your cast with AI—then reuse those profiles in scenes and the manuscript so readers (and you) recognize the same person across chapters. Searching for Create Characters or “Describe your character” leads to /illustrations/characters. Saving a name and height unlocks smoother multi-image workflows and Scene selection.
What it does
On Characters you get:
- Empty state Create a character
- Sidebar Your Characters with Reset
- Prompt bar + optional reference upload (Upload a reference image for your character)
- Profile fields: Character Name, Height (ft), Species, Gender, Character Description
- Actions Save, Delete Character
- Toast gate: name + height required before continuing new generations (Character Details)
Steps
Step 1 — Open Characters and select a book
Illustrations → Characters (or Overview → Create Characters). Choose Select a Book.
Step 2 — Optional: set Image Settings style
Open the palette → Image Settings → Generate Style (or choose a style) so new characters share a look.
Step 3 — Optional: upload a reference image
Use Upload a reference image for your character (JPEG/PNG/GIF/WebP, under 5MB). Toast confirms the reference will guide generation.
Step 4 — Describe and generate
In Describe your character…, write appearance details and submit with the send icon. Wait while the image generates (In Progress if still working).
Step 5 — Name the character and set height
In the profile panel, enter Character Name and Height (ft). Add optional Species, Gender, and Character Description. Click Save (Saving…).
Step 6 — Generate more variants or reroll
Submit another prompt for additional images under that character, or click Roll the dice! 🤩🎲 (Rolling…) for a variation. If blocked, complete name/height when the Character Details toast appears.
Step 7 — Manage Your Characters
Browse thumbnails under Your Characters. Delete individual images or use Delete Character (confirm dialog) to remove the whole profile.
Tips
- Put distinctive visual traits in the first prompt (hair, clothing era, silhouette).
- Save before jumping to Scenes so the asset appears under Your Assets.
- Credits apply per generation—batch carefully.
- Gender/species fields help you organize; visual consistency still depends on prompts + style.
FAQ
How do I create a character illustration in Storyloft?
Illustrations → Characters, select a book, describe the character, generate, then Save with a name (and height to continue generating freely).
Why won’t Storyloft let me generate another image?

Can I use my own photo as a reference?
