What it does
Books lists manuscripts as cards. Clicking a standard novel opens /manuscripts/[id]/editor. Children’s and planning projects may open specialized editors. Paid users with an active plan get a ⋮ menu on cards for series tools, cover backgrounds, and Delete Book. Collaborators see role badges such as editor or viewer. On wide screens, a fixed Writing Goals panel on the right shows milestones and stats like total words and streaks. New accounts usually include the sample The Golden Bird plus your own books after create/import.
Steps
Step 1 — Go to Books
Click Books in the left sidebar (or the Storyloft logo Go to manuscripts). Wait for the library to load if you see the preparing splash.
Step 2 — Open a manuscript from its card
Click any book card. Storyloft opens the appropriate editor for that book type. When you finish a session, click Books again to return to the library—your cards remain unless you delete them.
Step 3 — Add a blank book or import a file
On the Add Book card:
- Click the main Add Book surface to create Untitled Manuscript and open the editor.
- Or click Import File and choose DOCX, Atticus, or Scrivener, then pick a file and wait for import progress (modal title for Word: DOCX Import).
Step 4 — Use the book card menu (series, cover, delete)
On eligible accounts, open the card ⋮ menu for actions such as:
- Create Series / Add to Series / Manage Series / Remove from Series
- Cover Background
- Delete Book
Series appear as grouped sections with their own ⋮ controls (Create Series, Manage Series, Delete Series). Deleting a series removes the grouping only—books stay in your library.
Step 5 — Delete a book carefully
Choose Delete Book, read Are you sure you want to delete this book? This cannot be undone., then confirm Delete (or Cancel). The card may show Deleting… briefly. Success toast: Manuscript deleted successfully.
Step 6 — Track Writing Goals on desktop
On large screens, use the right Writing Goals panel (Track your progress here.). Review Your Milestones, pick a book with Choose a book, and scan stats such as Total Words Written, Your Daily Record, Top Writing Streak, and Consistency Score (30 days).
Step 7 — Recognize collaborator books
If you were invited to a manuscript, the card footer may show editor or viewer. Open the card to work within your role; library-wide actions like creating series may still depend on ownership and plan.
Tips
- Empty library copy (No books found / Create your first book to get started) is rare for new users because of the sample manuscript—use Add Book when you are ready for your own title.
- Series and some card menus require an active paid plan—upgrade if ⋮ actions are missing.
- Prefer desktop for Writing Goals and comfortable card layouts.
- Build Story may appear only in local development—not on production Storyloft.
